yum!
Just the other night a news story on ABC caught my eye where 2 newscasters dined on a sample (albeit indulgent by my standards) meal out. This consisted of an appetizer of deep fried macaroni and cheese, entree which was a quesadilla burger and lastly dessert consisting of a mega-sized deep dish sundae.

…..packed 6,190 calories and 187 grams of saturated fat. The USDA recommends that adults our age eat roughly 2,000 calories per day, and no more than 20 grams of saturated fat. This means our single meal packed more than three times the daily recommended calories, and nearly 10 times the saturated fat suggested by federal guidelines.

They didn’t mention where the each of the items come from but from observing a poll recently that ranked some of the worst dinning out foods I was able to identify 2 of the 3.  The deep fried macaroni and cheese came from The Cheesecake Factory and the quesadilla burger came from Applebee’s.  The dessert I could not identify the source.  Note: All items were placed in non-descript containers and no marking identities of any restaurant were shown.  Probably not to give any of the establishments bad press.

After both ate the full 3 course meal they were polled on their general demeanor and they both reported feeling sluggish.  It wasn’t till they compared blood samples (now cloudy with fat) and artery scans (now smaller causing the heart to work harder) that the scary implications were shown.  The female correspondent was more effected then the male:

My blood also showed a difference, though not nearly as dramatic as Jon’s. On the other hand, my ultrasound revealed a startling change. A large dose of saturated fat causes a chemical reaction, wherein the arteries narrow and do not dilate properly. This means the heart must work harder to pump blood through the arteries. In my case, my heart was working so intensely to pump blood through my narrowed arteries, you could actually hear the difference in my blood flow.

I guess it’s pretty common sense that a 3 course meal of deep fried macaroni and cheese, a quesadilla burger then a mega-sized deep dish sundae isn’t eating healthy.   It makes me wonder though, when I see people order like this in a restaurant, how often their nightly dinner is close to this 6,190 calories and 187 grams of saturated fat pig-out.
